Transparency and Methodology

What we do, and how we do it

At Petrol Price Now, our mission is to provide South African motorists with accurate, up to date information regarding fuel costs. We believe in total transparency regarding where our data comes from and how price changes are determined.

Where Our Data Comes From

The price of fuel in South Africa is regulated by the government. We rely exclusively on official data provided by the following statutory bodies:

  • The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE): The DMRE is the primary authority responsible for regulating, controlling, and announcing the official monthly fuel price adjustments.
  • The Central Energy Fund (CEF): A state-owned entity reporting to the DMRE. The CEF provides daily updates on the “Basic Fuel Price” (BFP) and tracks the over- or under-recovery of fuel prices based on international petroleum product prices and the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate.

Understanding Fuel Price Calculations

South Africa’s fuel price is not arbitrary; it is calculated based on the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) plus various regulated margins, taxes, and levies (such as the General Fuel Levy and the Road Accident Fund Levy).

While the DMRE sets the official price on the first Wednesday of every month, the daily fluctuations we track allow us to show you the trend and therefore potential upcoming price change for the next month.

Disclaimer: Forecasted Price Changes

The “forecasted” or “predicted” price changes displayed on this website are not independent projections created by Petrol Price Now.

Important Notice: All daily price snapshots and forecasted changes shown on this platform are based strictly on the daily economic data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF). These figures represent the current “under-recovery” or “over-recovery” trends at a specific point in time and are subject to change based on global market volatility.

Petrol Price Now acts as an information aggregator; we do not influence these numbers, nor do we provide financial or speculative advice regarding fuel purchases. Our goal is simply to provide a trusted, reliable, and easy-to-access platform that keeps South African motorists informed and prepared.
